The Electric Light Orchestra ( ELO ) are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood with drummer Bev Bevan, Their music is characterised by a fusion of pop and classical arrangements with futuristic iconography,

After Wood’s departure in 1972, Lynne became the band’s sole leader, arranging and producing every album while writing nearly all of their original material. From this point until their first break-up in 1986, Lynne, Bevan, and keyboardist Richard Tandy were the group’s only consistent members. ELO was formed out of Lynne’s and Wood’s desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones.

It derived as an offshoot of Wood’s previous band, the Move, of which Lynne and Bevan were also members. During the 1970s and 1980s, ELO released a string of top 10 albums and singles, including the band’s most commercially successful album, the double album Out of the Blue (1977).

Two ELO albums reached the top of the British charts: the disco -inspired Discovery (1979) and the science-fiction -themed concept album Time (1981). In 1986 Lynne lost interest in the band and disbanded the group. Bevan responded by forming his own band, ELO Part II, which later became The Orchestra,

Apart from a brief reunion in the early 2000s, ELO remained largely inactive until 2014, when Lynne re-formed the band with Tandy as Jeff Lynne’s ELO, During ELO’s original 13-year period of active recording and touring, they sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Why did ELO break up?

1983: What happened to ELO? In 1983, Jeff Lynne decided to end ELO, following a dispute with their record label and falling out with the band’s manager Don Arden. However, it was in 1986 when the band officially disbanded, after ELO were made to make another album due to contractual agreements.

Is ELO like the Beatles?

1980s–1990s: Collaborations with the Beatles – During the 1980s and 1990s, Lynne collaborated on various projects with former members of the Beatles, The band had been a major influence on Lynne since the release of their debut album, Please Please Me, in 1963, and have continued to influence him throughout his career to date.

In 1968, while performing with The Idle Race, Lynne and the other members of the band were invited to a Beatles session at Abbey Road Studios, While there, he met the Beatles during the making of The White Album, witnessing the band making it together. He spent an hour at the session, before going back to the sessions with the Idle Race.

Years later, he admitted that being in the same room “caused me not to sleep for, like, three days.” The original aim of Electric Light Orchestra was to take up “where the Beatles had left off, and to present it on stage.” John Lennon praised the group, calling them the “sons of the Beatles” on a radio station when discussing the group’s 1973 single ” Showdown ” on the New York radio station WNEW.

  1. Lynne worked with George Harrison very closely in the late 1980s and they have taken a vacation to Australia.
  2. This friendship eventually led to Harrison’s appearance at the Birmingham Heartbeat Charity Concert, showing up as the finale of the concert and joining many other musicians in a rendition of ” Johnny B.

Goode “, as well as a one-off Electric Light Orchestra concert, both in 1986. In 1987, he appeared with Harrison at Prince’s Trust in Wembley Arena. Critics often compared Electric Light Orchestra to The Beatles, and they were often criticised for “ripping off” the band.

Why did Kelly Groucutt leave ELO?

Electric Light Orchestra – While playing with Barefoot in Birmingham, he was spotted by ELO’s Jeff Lynne ; and after Lynne, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy had watched him play, he was invited to join ELO, to replace Mike de Albuquerque, who had recently left the band.

Upon joining, he was asked to adopt a stage name because ELO had already had several members named Michael, Mike or Mik; he chose Kelly (a school nickname). ELO then set off on their Eldorado tour. The first Electric Light Orchestra album to feature Groucutt on bass guitar and as a backing vocalist was Face the Music (1975).

He assumed lead vocal duties on one or two album tracks typically, and his vocals can be heard on later ELO songs, most prominently on songs such as ” Nightrider ” (1975), “Poker” (1975), “Above the Clouds” (1976), “Across the Border” (1977), “Night in the City” (1977), “Sweet is the Night” (1977) and ” The Diary of Horace Wimp ” (1979).

  • Groucutt often displayed his operatic vocal talents during live performances of ” Rockaria! ” (1976), though these were not performed in the studio.
  • Groucutt continued contributing on the albums A New World Record (1976), Out of the Blue (1977), Discovery (1979), Xanadu (1980), Time (1981), and the early sessions for Secret Messages (1983).

By Time, Groucutt’s role in the band was reduced by Lynne from co-lead vocals to backing vocals exclusively. In 1982, he released his self-titled, debut solo album, Kelly, This album featured fellow ELO members Bev Bevan, Richard Tandy, Mik Kaminski and their orchestral co-arranger and conductor Louis Clark,

  1. In 2001, the album was remastered for CD.
  2. Groucutt remained with ELO until the onset of the recording sessions for the album Secret Messages in 1982.
  3. It was at this juncture that he left the band, unhappy with royalty payments during his tenure, and made the decision to sue management and band leader Jeff Lynne,

A settlement for the sum of £300,000 (equivalent to £1,076,900 in 2021 ) was reached out of court prior to proceedings, but Groucutt later reflected that he regretted suing Lynne. He is credited with playing bass on Secret Messages, although the 2018 album liner notes state that he only played on four songs (“Train of Gold” and ” Rock n Roll is King ” from the single disc release and “No Way Out” and ” Beatles Forever “) from the original double album.

Why was the Elo Zoom tour Cancelled?

History – After the release of the 2001 album Zoom, Jeff Lynne announced a North American tour, their first live set of concerts in 15 years. A promotional PBS show was recorded over two consecutive nights at CBS Television City in Los Angeles, ELO’s management abruptly cancelled the tour (due to slow ticket sales) and this footage was released on VHS and DVD by Image Entertainment,

The DVD earned Platinum status in Australia and the UK. Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy were the only band members returning from the original incarnation of ELO. All songs played on tour, except “Rock ‘n’ Roll Is King” and “All She Wanted”, were released on either the Electric Light Orchestra Live album or the Zoom Tour Live VHS/DVD.

The camera coverage of ELO’s comeback tour in 2001 was directed by Lawrence Jordan.

1983–1986: Secret Messages, Balance of Power, disbanding – ELO performing in 1986 (Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy pictured) Jeff Lynne wanted to follow Time with a double album, but CBS blocked his plan on the grounds that a double vinyl album would be too expensive in the oil crisis and not sell as well as a single record, so as a result, the new album was edited down to a single disc and released as Secret Messages in 1983; many of the out-takes were later released on Afterglow or as B-sides of singles.

The album was a hit in the UK reaching the top 5, but its release was undermined by a string of bad news that there would be no tour to promote the LP. Lynne, discouraged by the dwindling crowds on the Time tour, CBS’s order to cut Secret Messages down to one disc, and his falling out with manager Don Arden, decided to end ELO in late 1983.

Drummer Bevan moved on to play drums for Black Sabbath, and bassist Groucutt, unhappy with no touring income that year, decided to sue Lynne and Jet Records in November 1983, eventually resulting in a settlement for the sum of £300,000 (equivalent to £994,300 in 2018).

While Secret Messages debuted at number four in the United Kingdom, it subsequently performed poorly in the charts, with a lack of hit singles (though ” Rock ‘n’ Roll Is King ” was a sizeable hit in UK, the US and Australia) and a lukewarm media response. That same year, Lynne moved into production work: having already produced two tracks for the Dave Edmunds album Information, he would go on to produce six cuts for his next, Riff Raff in 1984, and one cut on the Everly Brothers reunion album EB 84,

He also composed a track for former ABBA member Agnetha Fältskog ‘s 1985 album Eyes of a Woman, Lynne and Tandy went on to record tracks for the 1984 Electric Dreams soundtrack under Lynne’s name; however, Lynne was contractually obliged to make one more ELO album.

So Lynne, Bevan and Tandy returned to the studio in 1984 and 1985 as a three-piece (with Christian Schneider playing saxophone on some tracks and Lynne again doubling on bass in addition to his usual guitar in the absence of an official bass player) to record Balance of Power, released early in 1986 after some delays.

Though the single ” Calling America ” placed in the Top 30 in the United Kingdom (number 28) and Top 20 in the States, subsequent singles failed to chart. The album lacked actual classical strings, which were replaced once again by synthesizers, played by Tandy and Lynne.

  • However, despite being a 3-piece, much of the album was made by Lynne alone, with Tandy and Bevan giving their additions later.
  • The band was then rejoined by Kaminski, Clark and Morgan, adding Martin Smith on bass guitar, and proceeded to perform a small number of live ELO performances in 1986, including shows in England and Germany along with US appearances on American Bandstand, Solid Gold, then at Disneyland that summer.

ELO performed at the Heart Beat 86 charity concert organised by Bevan in the band’s hometown of Birmingham on 15 March 1986; a hint of Lynne’s future was seen when George Harrison appeared onstage during the encore, joining in the all-star jam of ” Johnny B.
